Meet Our Staff
Sheryl Darlington is the Volunteer Manager at The Compass Food Bank and Outreach Centre. Sheryl began as a volunteer and is now responsible for finding, training, and supporting the 200+ volunteers who contribute an average of 40,000 volunteer hours a year. Her passion for giving back to the community, paired with her previous experience as a computer programmer and project manager for The Bank of Montreal, is an asset to The Compass. This technology background positioned Sheryl to help upgrade the technology platforms for the volunteer management system, the website, and more. Sheryl believes that The Compass is the place people go to for help when they most need it. She believes there is such potential to teach children and engage them on a lifelong journey to do charitable work, and see the larger world around them, something she has witnessed firsthand with her own children. When not scheduling volunteers or volunteering herself, Sheryl can be spotted up north at the family cottage, enjoying the wilderness and exploring wildlife. She is also an avid reader and is very engaged with personal development (online training, seminars & mentoring groups).
Trish Trapani is the Market Manager at The Compass Food Bank and Outreach Centre. Previously in a retail management career, Trish was working part-time at a local coffee shop when she saw the job posting on her church bulletin. Trish was intrigued by the position of Market Manager as she believed she could combine her skills from retail & food service to make an impact in her community. Trish was correct! Her employment experience enhances her ability to prioritize, multitask, think quickly and de-escalate situations. Trish manages the day to day operations of the food bank, in which a typical day consists of providing leadership and direction to the various teams as well as interacting with clients. Trish truly believes that The Compass is a lifeline for so many that live in South Mississauga. Not only does The Compass feed the person, but The Compass feeds the soul of clients. The Compass builds a community and relationship with all of the clients, and Trish feels that working at The Compass is more than a job, it’s a being and a sense of belonging. Trish hopes that there will one day be no need for food banks, but until then she would like to see the programming grow so clients can access many resources on-site, such as primary health care, dental health, mental health services, hot meals 7 days a week, a housing program, accessible shower facilities, pay what you can laundry and cooking classes, to mention a few. When not onsite running The Compass, Trish can be found spending time camping with her family and hanging out with her three-year-old German Shepherd, Duke!
Karen Sears is the Inventory Manager at The Compass Food Bank and Outreach Centre. Previously a dedicated volunteer for many years, The Compass saw an opportunity to hire her to help make order out of chaos! Karen is responsible for the organization of The Compass food stores and ensures the Market is a place of beauty. Karen truly believes that the marginalized population in our community needs our help and while making a judgment is easy, patience, understanding and compassion advance us as a society. Karen expects that the client base will continue to grow over the coming years, and her greatest wish is for The Compass to continue to keep serving the demand in the best way possible. When not busy ensuring our Market is well stocked with a diverse range of products, Karen is advocating for affordable housing in Ontario! It is kindness that does the most good in the world!
Melinda Prain is the Communications & Fundraising Manager at The Compass Food Bank and Outreach Centre. Melinda has over 20 years of management experience in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. Melinda began her career working for one of Canada’s largest pharmaceuticals wholesalers, leading the Inventory Management team nationwide. It was there that Melinda first engaged with charitable organizations and started to realize her true passion for giving back to the larger community. When her son was diagnosed with a serious medical condition, Melinda left her job to help her son stabilize and began volunteering with that charitable organization. She was asked to join the Board of Directors and then accepted a position as Managing Director. In the years since then, Melinda became involved with the Compass Food Bank on behalf of another business and when The Compass needed someone to fill the role managing marketing and fundraising, Melinda jumped at the opportunity. In her spare time, Melinda enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, playing tennis and golf and is an avid reader.
Jaclyn is the Client Services Coordinator at The Compass Food Bank an Outreach Centre. Jaclyn shared that growing up in the south Mississauga area, she already had an awareness surrounding the positive impact The Compass has on the community. Upon beginning a new chapter in her life, she was determined to give back to the community by volunteering at The Compass in the summer of 2019. Since being at The Compass, Jaclyn has been strongly influenced to pursue her education at the Toronto Metropolitan University where she is earning her Bachelors of Social Work degree. This has strengthened her desire to help the community. Jaclyn frequently meets with new, and existing clients with the intention of creating and maintaining a healthy, safe space, while navigating how The Compass can best meet them at their point of need
Lynn Beaton has been volunteering with The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre for 4 years while also enjoying a successful real estate career for over 24 years. Her career in real estate has enabled Lynn to also follow her passion of giving back to her community in many ways.
Lynn’s passion for cooking and being surrounded by the working of a kitchen makes her a great fit for the role of Kitchen Coordinator at The Compass. In this position, Lynn is responsible for providing leadership to the kitchen volunteers, managing kitchen inventory, and working closely with our chef to provide more than 4,500 healthy and nutritious hot meals for our clients each month.
In her spare time, Lynn enjoys spending time with her friends, meeting new people through her real estate work and is devoted to helping her rescue dog enjoy its best life.
