RIP Ray Barlow
Ray Barlow, a volunteer at the Compass, died of a heart attack on June 21. We just learned of his death because he regularly helped with unloading food delivered to the Compass on Tuesdays and it was only after he missed a couple of weeks that we followed up and learned the sad news. While out for a walk he asked someone to call 911. He had heart surgery and was expected to recover but things took a turn for the worse.
He was generous with his time, cooking and baking. Ray learned many of his cooking skills from Julia Child, not because he had an opportunity to attend her classes but because, as a teenager, he watched her shows after school. He single-handedly made a meal for 30 men at the Compass. He brought his delicious and healthy cookies to share at the Compass and was called the cookie-man by some.
Ray’s sacrifice of service at the Compass was all the more generous because he constantly suffered from back pain caused by a work accident many years ago. He did not complain or mention the pain and simply carried on helping to get the work done. Ray was smart, funny and modest and was an example for many of his friends at the Compass. From the time Ray was a young man he was always a champion for people he felt were disadvantaged.

What Clients & Volunteers Say
Thank you to all the volunteers and staff. You do a wonderful job in helping anyone in our community who truly struggles.
This is an absolutely incredible team!! The service they provide is so necessary, and definitely helps the community run smoother.
My 5 years as a volunteer with the Compass have been some of my happiest. I feel very privileged that in my role here, I have been allowed to get to know so many wonderful people. There are huge rewards too. The sense of fulfillment is amazing and the warmth and gratitude of the clients is priceless.
The kindest group of people you could ever meet volunteer at The Compass.
Most helpful community and outreach centre I had ever experienced.
Staff are amazing! They make you feel like a normal person and not someone who is struggling to get by. The staff make this place!
