We all know The Compass Food Bank & Outreach Centre is a place that helps people.
Thinking of that likely makes you think of all the clients that are helped every single month.
As the Volunteer Manager at The Compass, I’d like to give you another perspective. For the volunteers at The Compass, their time with us becomes a meaningful way to give back and connect with the community; a way to use the skills they’ve acquired over a lifetime to do good, or a way for new graduates to put everything they’ve learned at school into practice in the real world. There are so many reasons that people volunteer, but whatever those reasons, they become part of the fabric of The Compass community.
When I started as a volunteer in 2015, I wanted an opportunity to give back to the community. I had no idea how much fun it would be, or how great it would be to connect with so many people. I started volunteering and The Compass felt like home. Now I am so grateful to be the Volunteer Manager and help others experience just how special The Compass is.
The staff, clients and volunteers at The Compass are a great team. When you walk in the door, you’re likely to see people sitting and having coffee and a meal, a team preparing meals and snacks in the kitchen, our Food Bank market volunteers busy either packing online orders, or helping clients shop in person again, and a team busy in the back sorting and organizing food donations. There are so many tasks that need to be completed on a daily basis, and it happens almost effortlessly. There are so many helping hands, working together, that wonderful things happen every day. The circle of good extends outwards, to each of you reading this. To the people in our community who send people to The Compass for help, to those who raise awareness, raise funds, run food drives, and keep The Compass in your hearts and prayers every day. Thank you for being part of our community.
