Welcome to the first instalment of our Volunteer Spotlight series, where we showcase some of our hardworking Compass volunteers and share a little bit about them.
First up, meet Earl Driver, vice-chair of the board of the directors, a Compass volunteer for over 12 years, the cooker of The Compass’s favourite Christmas turkeys, and the top fundraiser for The Compass Walk the Walk fundraiser!
Earl started volunteering with The Compass over 12 years ago, searching for a way to give back and make a difference in his community. Since then, Earl has become an important member of The Compass’s community, currently acting as the vice-chair of board of directors, as well as the property manager here at The Compass. Many will also know him as the handyman of The Compass: if you need it, Earl can find it. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Earl has worked as a Compass executive on-site. On top of that, Earl has cooked all of the turkeys for The Compass’s Christmas Dinner on every Christmas day since 2016. That’s a lot of turkeys!
Not only has Earl made an impact with his work within The Compass walls, but Earl also holds the title of The Compass Walk’s number one fundraiser in his seven years of participation, reaching over $7500 just last year! The Compass Walk the Walk is one of The Compass’s annual fall fundraisers, where teams and individuals don their Compass shirts and walk in support of The Compass Food Bank. This fall, the Walk will take place from September 13th to September 19th, and Earl plans to walk the complete 31km perimeter of The Compass boundary. If you’re looking for a dedicated walker to sponsor this year, Earl’s definitely your guy!
When we asked Earl what he liked most about working at The Compass, he simply answered that he enjoys “helping other people.” From cooking the Christmas Turkeys to fundraising for the Compass Walk, Earl’s efforts definitely do help to make a difference. Outside of working with The Compass, Earl enjoys bowling, cooking and gardening, as well as watching a good game of baseball.
