Mississauga has the fastest-growing rate of food bank users in Ontario.

This phenomenon of food insecurity is Canada-wide. Reports from all areas of the country are showing a steep climb in use of food banks. Canada was instrumental in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 76 years ago, yet we have failed to uphold one of its fundamental rights: the right to food. On Nov. 13, Mississauga City Council declared food insecurity an emergency, underscoring a stark reality: Mississauga has the fastest-growing rate of food bank users in Ontario, surpassing the provincial average. Food insecurity stems from multiple factors, including high rent, inadequate government assistance, rising food and gas prices, and the prevalence of low-paying or part-time jobs.
